Abstract

Purpose: This study is about the methodology for developing the brief, easy and comprehensive fatigue scale which has high reliability and validity in terms of a word and culture of cancer patients in Korea.

Methods: The procedure was performed following 6 stages by Linderman(1976). 1) The basis was set up with qualitative materials and various references. 2) Establishment of the purpose is determined with the choice of user and use. 3) Pre-questions were selected among 75 items to 42 items through 5 stages. 4) Pre-survey was completed with pilot survey witch were 30 item and medical information survey. 5) We have confirmed the analysis of factors and reliability analysis with 120 subjects who had the cancer treatments. 6) This survey has performed for an evidence of validity and reliability of the developed tool. 250 subjects from 3 university hospitals and 2 general hospitals responded to a questionnaire that assessed fatigue in cancer patients. This method yielded Cronbach s a value as an internal consistency for the reliability. In addition, it went through the procedure which made an increase the content validity for validity. And Construct validity was determined convergent validity and discriminant validity.

Results: Factor analysis resulted in a five-factor solution that accounted for 67.37% of the variance. Convergent validity showed significantly differences between POMS- fatigue and the our tool(r= .631£¬p=000). And discriminant validity showed significantly differences between POMS-vigor and the our tool(r=-.421£¬p=000).Cronbach s alpha for the total scale was estimated to be 0.947 and to be between 0.904 and 0.784 for the subscale.

Conclusion: The developing fatigue scale has high reliability and validity as 5 points Likert s scale witch quantitatively measure the subjectivity. Providing the way on an assessment in fatigue and arbitration in effect for cancer patients, it is supposed to contribute the development of nursing knowledge about the fatigue of cancer patient.
